⚽ Alan Shearer, former Newcastle United striker, has weighed in on Liam Delap’s start at Chelsea, describing the young forward as promising but still a bit rough around the edges.
Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town this summer in a £30 million deal, scored his first goal for the club in their 3-0 win over ES Tunis at the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said:
“Getting an early goal at a new club always helps, and I think Delap can be really happy with how he's started. He looked confident, and the goal he scored was taken really well — full of belief.
I’ve always liked him. He’s still a little raw, but there’s real potential there. He’ll only get better.”
Chelsea face Benfica next in the Club World Cup Round of 16 on Saturday.
